IUI or Intrauterine Insemination treatment is one of the most commonly used assisted reproductive procedures opted by many. Usually, the sperms swim through the female reproductive organs to reach the egg and fuse with the egg to form an embryo which then develops and grows in the fetus during pregnancy. In this particular process, the sperm is placed inside a woman’s uterus to facilitate the process of fertilization. The main goal of the IUI technique is to increase the number of sperm that reaches the Fallopian tubes and simultaneously increase the chances of fertilization.
The major reason why IUI is used is because of low sperm count or decreased sperm mobility. This technique can be a treatment option in the below-mentioned conditions.
-When there is a cervical condition preventing pregnancy including cervical mucus problem.
-In case there is a problem in cervical scar tissue from the previous procedure which might hinder the sperms
-Ejaculation dysfunction with ovulation induction
Ovulation stimulating medicines are used prior to intrauterine insemination and then you will be monitored to know whether the eggs are matured or not.
-IUI treatment procedure is performed usually around the time of ovulation
-The semen sample will then be washed by the lab to separate the semen from the seminal fluid
-To insert the sperm directly into the uterus a catheter is used. This whole process maximizes the number of sperm cells that are placed in the uterus which increases the possibility of conception.
This whole process takes only a few minutes and one might feel little pain. However, there is also a small risk of infection after IUI, and the chances of becoming pregnant with multiples also increase.
The success factor of IUI depends on multiple factors and if the couple opts for the IUI procedure to be performed each month then the success rates may reach as high as 20% per cycle. It all matters on different variables like the female age, the reason for infertility, and many other factors.
The success of the whole procedure also depends upon age, the type of fertility drugs used prior, and the reason for infertility.
Below is the Success Rate of IUI by Age
Less than 35 years of age – 10-20%
Between 35 to 40 years of age – 10%
40 years and more – 2-5%
